Experience Saltstraumen– the world's strongest maelstrom
Saltstraumen is one of Europe’s most spectacular natural phenomena and part of Europe’s Wild Wonders. Every six hours, up to 400 million cubic meters of seawater is forced through the 150-meter-narrow strait between Saltfjorden and Skjerstadfjorden.
The water can reach speeds of up to 20 knots, creating powerful eddies and whirlpools – so-called “boilers” – that can be up to 15 meters in diameter. Experiencing this from a RIB boat gives you a unique closeness to the natural forces that make Saltstraumen one of Norway’s most impressive attractions.
Sea Eagle Safari and aspectacular coastal scenery
On our way to Saltstraumen we make several stops for sightseeing and to look for white-tailed eagles. The white-tailed eagle is Northern Europe’s largest bird of prey, with a wingspan of up to 2.4 meters. It is a powerful experience to see this majestic bird soaring over the fjords – often surprisingly close to the boat.
Along the way, our skippers share stories and knowledge about the nature, wildlife and history of the area around Bodø. They know the fjord, islands and currents well, and do their best to give you both good stories and good photo opportunities.

You can always leave your luggage at our office while you are on any of our tours. There will either be someone at the office or we will lock it in. If you have a small bag/backpack you would like to bring, we have a waterproof box on the boat.
Most people can participate in the RIB tour to Saltstraumen. Pregnant women and people with neck, back and pelvic problems or similar should be aware that this tour may involve shaking and bumping. You must decide for yourself whether you want to expose yourself or not. If in doubt, you can contact us or talk to the skipper before the tour.
The minimum recommended age is 6 years. This is because they should be able to sit properly in their own seat. Please contact us if you are in doubt.
This varies from day to day. The times listed in our booking calendar are the optimal starting times for the trip, to ensure that we reach Saltstraumen when it is at its strongest. The current is based on the full moon and new moon, so if you want to experience Saltstraumen when it is much stronger than normal, we recommend doing so on days around the full moon and new moon.
It is completely safe to join us to Saltstraumen. Our skippers have many years of experience and knowledge. Our goal is to let you experience Saltstraumen, the nature and the sea, rather than driving as fast as possible. We want to create an enjoyable trip for everyone at a pace that everyone on board feels comfortable with.
There is room for 12 guests in each boat. If demand is high, we have the possibility to set up more boats.
There must be a minimum of 4 registered guests for the RIB tour to Saltstraumen to proceede.
